  • If you are going on holiday, don’t forget to move your potted plants to a shady place to reduce their water requirements.
  • Harvest maincrop potatoes.
  • Late August is an excellent time to start sowing lawns. The warm soil and overnight dews give the seed a perfect start.
  • Keep deadheading flowering plants such as roses regularly so as to encourage flowering.
  • Prune out fruited canes on summer-cropping raspberries.
  • Regularly deadhead plants in pots and hanging baskets and feed fortnightly with tomato feed to prolong flowering.
  • If you’re going away on holiday, set up an automatic watering system for pots and hanging baskets.
  • Summer prune apple trees, this will encourage good fruiting in future years.
  • Long side-shoots on Wisteria should be pruned back to approximately 20cm to encourage flowering spurs.
  • Keep turning your compost heap, it will speed up decomposition.
